VICTORIA FALLS add-on

What times of year can you go to South Africa?

Spring

South Africa’s spring runs from September to November.

Spring is the season for wildflowers, with the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden at its best. It is also whale season, and a whale watching excursion in Hermanus can be arranged. Temperatures are mild, good for safaris and walking, and there are fewer visitors than in summer.

Summer

South Africa's summer runs from December to February.

Summer brings hot weather and long days. Cape Town beaches are at their best, and Kruger is green with newborn animals. Migratory birds arrive, festivals are common, and the atmosphere is lively. It is high season, with larger crowds, but also the best time to escape the Canadian winter.

Fall

South Africa's fall runs from March to May.

Fall is harvest time in the wine regions, making it the best season to visit vineyards and enjoy tastings. The weather is still warm but less intense than summer, and there are fewer visitors. It is a good balance of comfortable conditions, seasonal experiences, and lighter crowds.

Winter

South Africa's winter runs from June to August.

While Kruger is spectacular year-round, the sparse vegetation in winter can make spotting wildlife easier. Along the coast, whale season begins. Cooler weather suits those who avoid heat, and tourist numbers are lower. For Canadian families, school holidays make this a convenient time to travel.
